Here are some of the key negotiation skills that are needed when you are talking to big retail giants like Wal-Mart.

When you have a problem, when there's something you engage in with big giants like say Wal-Mart that requires agreement so that it becomes a negotiation, the first advice is to think in partnership terms, really focus on a common goal, of getting costs out, for example, and ask questions.
Don't make demands or statements ... you know, can we do this better and so forth. If the relationship with Wal-Mart is truly a partnership, negotiating to resolve differences should not endanger the tenor of the partnership.
Don't spend time griping. Be problem solvers instead. Approach Wal-Mart by saying, "Let's work together and drive costs down and produce it so much cheaper you don't have to replace me, because if you work with me I could do it better." Learn from and lobby with people and their partners who have credibility, and with people having problems in the field.
Don't ignore small issues or let things fester.
Do not let Wal-Mart become more than 20 percent of your company's business. It's hard to negotiate with a company that controls yours. Never go into a meeting without a clear agenda. Make good use of the buyers' face time. Leave with answers. Don't make small talk. Get to the point; their time is valuable. Bring underlying issues to the surface. Attack them head on and find resolution face to face.
Trying to bluff Wal-Mart is never a good idea. There is always someone willing to do it cheaper to gain the business. You have to treat the relationship as a marriage. Communication and compromise is key.
Don't take for granted that just because the buyer is young they don't know what they are talking about or that it will be an easy sell. Most young buyers are very ambitious to move up within the company and can be some of the toughest, most educated buyers you will encounter. Know your product all the way from the production standpoint to the end use. Chances are your buyer does, and will expect you to be even more knowledgeable.

wireless router configuration

Few things to remember –

· Don’t connect the ADSL Lan Cable to the Internet Uplink port of the Wireless Router. It never worked for me. Always connect it to one of the 4 ports excluding the designated Internet port. Local machine's mac Addresses can be anything of your choice. But it is a good idea to follow the 192.168.x.x convention. If you get lost any time, feel free to reset the configuration by poking a pin into the reset slot on the modem and the router. Don’t compromise on the security. Always enable WPA and save your key. Don’t let your friendly neighbors ride on your network! Don't forget to notedown the WPA access password.

Airtel tries to make the wireless configuration sound very hard (unusual to hear right !!). Most of the OEM try to keep this process very simple so that they can sell it out to any commonman, is what I believe.
But anyways..
Following are the major steps for configuring the modem with any brand wireless routers ( D-Link, Netgear, Linksys.....so on and so forth)
1. Change Airtel's modem to a bridge.
- Log onto the modem at 192.168.1.1 ( use admin login if you know the passwd, mostly its either admin or blank ( pls leave the passwd textbox empty :)) )
- Change LAN type to DHCP disabled and WAN to bridge mode from PPPoE.
2. Configure your new wireless router.
- Log onto the router at 192.168.0.1 ( use admin login if you know the passwd, mostly its either admin or blank)
- name the connection and set the WEP or WPA encryption option set up.
- enter the userid and passwd of the ISP in the WAN segment.
3. Configuration at the receipent's side.
- disable the LAN network adapter if the comp/laptop doesnt pick up the new wireless connection automaticaly.
- make a new wireless connection with the new WEP code.

how to build ferrocement boats.
What you do is build a wooden frame in the shape of the boat you want, tack on several layers of chicken wire and metal rods . . . and then cement over all your mistakes (you'll have a lot more leeway with this process than if you were working with wood or fiberglass). Once the reinforced or "ferro" cement sets up, you'll have a seaworthy hull that's both dirt-cheap and virtually maintenance-free. And, if you keep the thickness of the troweled-on pour of cement down to less than an inch (which provides plenty of strength), the shell will weigh about the same as a similar hull constructed of wood.
The ferrocement process seems ideally suited for that large boat you never thought you could afford. Pool your spare change and weekends with a few friends and you can build the hull of a 36-foot fishing boat in 700 man-hours for a materials cost of less than a grand! Or bring in a 50-foot work boat hull—with deck and bulkheads—for less than 2,000 man-hours and about $4,000.

Yes, it seems certain that ferrocement boats are here to stay . . . still, a few words of caution are in order before you dash off to "pour your own".
Many experts in the field advise against using the process on very small designs—say an 18-foot boat—because the thin-hulled craft that result are not (in the experts' opinion) seaworthy. We know of several people who've constructed exactly such designs, however, and they have no complaint. Then again, they weren't amateurs either.
It should also be noted—even when constructing a bigger ferroconcrete craft—that the final cementing: plays a very critical part in determining the ultimate strength of the vessel. If you can find the cash to hire a professional plasterer to do the job, by all means do so.

Traffi Signal.
Honestly, I didn't know that this was a madhur bhandarkar movie, till I started playing it. Well, to me, what he has portrayed in this movie is yet another reflection of what India has been going through in the last few years. Lowlife goondas controlling begger industry, honest educated engineers homicide and organised sex industry and so on.
I liked the character played by Randhir (MTV fame), pretty natural and touching. Romance between silsila and rani seemed very natural. Unlike page3, this seems to be a better screenplay and nice storyline as well.

Good movie for me personally, as this was my first history movie about Texas. I would be lying if dont say I wasnt impressed after watching the movie. My fav character inthis movie would be Bowie & Crockett.

The good news first: The Alamo is probably the most historically accurate depiction yet to reach the screen of the famous siege. The bad news is that "historically accurate" does not necessarily translate into "dramatically successful." Emotionally inert and poorly paced, The Alamo transforms one of Texas' best-known events into an uninvolving bore. And, to add a dose of irony to the proceedings, the most compelling elements of the film are those that transpire away from the Alamo.

I was out at the AMC theatres in great lakes crossing mall, I was accompanied by my roomies.

Movie starts off with Bob ( Robbin) doing his daily chores as responsible father in raising his daughter and Son. then his vacation trip gets cancelled due to his boss's new schedule to meet some prospective partners in Colorado. So Robin decides to rent a RV for this road trip to Boulder,Colorado.
Bob's family meets the gorneckies in a RV camp, they are one honest and fun family, they keep helping Bob all aong till he reaches Colorado. Bob's senti and emotion filled speech to the Alpine soda company delegates leave everyone so moved, that he lands a new job for himself with Larry and Garry of Alpine Soda Co.

i would rate 3.5 on the reel scale.

When the daughter gets old enough to go to school, that, along with some other occurrences behind his control, bring his familial situation to the attention of social services. Facing the threat of losing his daughter, Sam finds by an interesting accident the lawyer Rita (Pfeiffer), who has problems of her own. Now he just has to convince her and the court that he and Lucy belong together, despite the fact that his daughter is already becoming intellectually superior to him.

Sean penn is a treat to watch, for the wise ones, pls carry your tissues with you.

John travolta is Chili Parmer, a loanshark on a mission to Los Angeles to recover $300,000 gained through an insurance fraud. Once near Hollywood, however, Chili, an avowed movie-lover, becomes seduced by the thought of producing a film. So he hooks up with director Harry (Gene Hackman) and scream queen Karen (Rene Russo). And when Chili starts to pitch an idea, none other than big time actor Martin Weir (Danny DeVito) shows interest. Nevertheless, even as things start looking up for Chili's movie, a host of gangsters try to muscle in.

I like the way Travolta talks in this movie, with this typical manerisms.
I would rate 3 on ReelScale.

Movie Review - The Apostle

I saw this movie couple of weeks back. I wanted to blog this review from the time I was done with the movie. Today, I had some chance to do it.
"Two thumbs to Duvall", Robert Duvall gives a performance of lifetime with a strong southerner accent. The Apostle is not the kind of movie that provokes a profound change in the viewer, but it offers a balanced portrait of a unique personality. The Movie and the actor were nominated for academy award that year. This doesnt preach religion as most might think after looking at the name of the movie.

Simply, a must watch for Drame filmgoers.
I would rate 3.8 on Reelsclae ( Reel scale is on a scale of 1-5).

To get all the commercial advantages of the internet, you need to set up a fully-fledged e-commerce site. That is one where online customers can browse stock, select items to fill a shopping basket and then go to a virtual counter to pay for the goods.

The main difference between this and a brochure site that simply displays your products and company information is interactivity. Your customer is entering information and making choices on your website and this necessarily requires a more sophisticated website. There are a number of ways you can get this onto your site.

Unless you’re an internet expert or have a lot of time on your hands, you’re unlikely to design and build your own site. Many ISPs and technology providers have fixed-priced packages that enable you to build and host a website with an online shop containing a set number of products and a payment point.

Examples of such ‘turnkey’ packages are BT Storecentre and Freeserve Marketplace and prices start at around £40 per month (not including payment processing charges which we look at later). The disadvantages are that since you build your website from a template you have very little control over how your entire site looks and also where it is hosted.

If you already have a simple brochure site you can simply add a shopping feature to it using off the shelf e-commerce software costing around £350. When choosing software you should check how well it can be adapted to your existing website colour scheme; whether it has a secure socket layer (SSL), which is the e-commerce standard for protecting credit card details; and the additional features such as calculation of the shipping charge and payment in more than one currency.

There are a lot of e-commerce software manufacturers about but some of the better known are Actinic, Cybershop, Shop@ssitant and Shopcreator. If you buy from an established supplier, you should be able to upgrade the software as new versions are developed.

Although not as restrictive as the turnkey solutions, this software is still based on templates. If you’re really serious about e-commerce and think that the potential benefits would warrant a larger investment, then you may want to have your site developed by a specialist as an integral part of your website design.

“I would always recommend getting somebody in to build the e-commerce into your website. You need it to be easy for you to update it regularly and easy for the customer to use. At the moment, two thirds of online purchases [that are started] are uncompleted, because the shopping basket is complicated to use or because they are worried about security. The website has to look professional to make the customer comfortable with buying,” says business advisor Lyn Burkett.

History of Tanjore Painting
Tracing its roots to the historical golden era of the early 18th century, Tanjore artwork is one of the many indigenous art forms for which India is noted. Originating in Tanjore about 300 kms from Chennai( Madras), which was the then capital of the Gupta empire, this form of art developed at the height of cultural evolvement achieved during that period.

An extraordinary visual amalgamation of both art and craft, Tanjore paintings mainly consist of themes on Hindu gods and goddesses. The characteristics of the Tanjore paintings are its brilliant colour schemes, decorative jewellery with stones and cut glasses and its larger-than-life figures. The themes are mostly mythological, with figures of Lord Krishna in various poses and depicting various stages of his life being the most favourite. Today people are experimenting with birds, animals, building structures and other subjects.

Crafted with meticulous care the Thanjavoor (Tanjore) pictures are unique. What sets them apart from Indian paintings in general are the embellishments made over the basic drawings with precious and semi-precious stones as well as the relief work which gives them a three dimensional effect. The pictures are of various sizes, ranging from huge works spanning whole walls to small miniatures no longer than 6-inch square.

The paintings decorate the puja rooms in residences, orcades in major hotels and lobbies in Corporate Offices. They also make nice gifts for Diwali, Weddings and other special occasions.

Art of Creating Tanjore Paintings
These paintings are remarkable in its step-by-step creation from the actual canvas board to the final touches. Adorned with rubies, diamonds and other precious gemstones, and trimmed with gold foil, Tanjore paintings were actually speaking-- treasures. Nowadays, however semi precious stones are used in place of real ones, but the use of gold foil has not altered.

The 'canvas' for a Tanjore painting is usually a plank of wood over which a layer of cloth is pasted. The cloth is coated with lime paste and smoothened by rubbing with a smooth stone till the overlay is smooth, levelled and even. Now, the canvas is ready for painting.

On this canvas, the artist draws a detailed pencil-sketch.

Layers of paste made from glue (obtained from neem trees) and limestone are moulded and applied on the canvas to create a three-dimensional effect in embellishing and ornamentating a theme.

Selected gems of varies hues, are inlaid onto this layer of paste. Gold leaves are affixed on selected areas. The shine and glean on the gold leaves used by the tanjore style paintings, will last forever.

Outsourcing Legal Work (to the Midwest)

There was another article in the Washington Times about law firms outsourcing some of the work on their cases to other countries. One firm, Venable LLP, was quoted as saying "Clients are entitled to get these things done in an efficient way." *

This is a phenomenon that needs to be seriously considered. More than 3 million U.S. jobs have been outsourced to other countries in the past four years with a projected 13 million forecast to move offshore in the next 10 years. However, for patent legal work, the potential cost savings are more than a little murky. One article states that legal work that is done in the U.S. only costs one-tenth or one-twelfth the amount in India. I think they need to do their homework.

The tide is turning. A recent US report warned that the challenge for science and technology in America is that even if it does everything right, the world (read India, China) poses unprecedented competitive challenges. Ten years ago, such a report would have been scoffed at. Not any longer.

More and more Indian techies, scientists, doctors are homeward bound, giving up high-paying jobs abroad and joining R&D units, hospitals, government institutions or even their alma mater here. America's brain drain is becoming India's brain gain.

"It's a really exciting time to be here," declares Kunal Bajaj, project consultant with Telecom Regulatory Authority of India. An engineer-MBA from Wharton, Bajaj chucked his tech honcho's job with a New York company and came home to be part of the excitement - India's booming telecom sector.

Then there's Chandra Venkataraman, who's returned to teach at her alma mater, IIT Bombay. "The wide variety of jobs in R&D, management and engineering make it a real option to live and work in India." After doing her post-doctorate from Stanford, Chandra taught in the US for a year. And yet, "I never wanted to live anywhere else but India. There's always a connection with one's country that comes through our parents of the Independence generation - a sense of public service. There's also a feeling that if one works here, one can make a more meaningful contribution."
